SIMPLEXGRINNELL® CONTINUES TO MAKE PROGRESS IN REDUCING CARBON FOOTPRINT, PROMOTING HEALTHY, SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT

Purchase of 200 Ford Fusion Hybrid Vehicles Furthers the Effort
to Reduce Environmental Impact

Las Vegas, Nev. (June 7, 2010) – The integration of Ford Fusion hybrid vehicles into the SimplexGrinnell fleet of vehicles is the latest step forward in the company’s ongoing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and promote a healthy and sustainable environment.

SimplexGrinnell, a Tyco International company, has purchased 200 Ford Fusion hybrid vehicles for use by sales and management personnel in its non-decaled fleet. The company is working toward a goal of having hybrid vehicles ultimately make up 25% of the company’s fleet.

The addition of hybrid vehicles continues the overall progress SimplexGrinnell is making in reducing its environmental impact. Thus far, the company has cut fuel consumption by 5% by reducing the number of vehicles in its fleet, making wider use of smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, and employing GPS technology as a transportation efficiency tool. The company’s environmental commitment is part of what SimplexGrinnell is highlighting at the 2010 NFPA® Conference & Expo.

Supporting Tyco’s Overall Environmental Commitment
All of the environmental initiatives under way at SimplexGrinnell support a Tyco company-wide effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, waste and water consumption by 25 percent over the next five years. The Tyco program, known as "Vital World," includes a series of steps the company is taking around the world to reduce its impact on the environment and to help customers reduce theirs.

“In today’s world, industry leadership must go hand in hand with a commitment to the environment and sustainability,” said Jim Spicer, president of SimplexGrinnell. “As a Tyco company, we are committed to helping create a greener future for our company, our employees, our customers and the communities we serve.”

SimplexGrinnell is also participating in the first ever EcoWheels Green Driver Challenge organized by the company’s fleet management vendor – Wheels, Inc. Running April 22, 2010 through July 1, 2010, the program challenges drivers to work to reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2) output from their vehicles by pledging to take small, easy steps that can have a big impact. Employees can pledge to check tire pressure regularly, reduce idling time, plan routes in advance, accelerate more gradually and reduce excess cargo. By signing up to participate, employees are able to immediately see the impact of their pledge on the environment and on the program goal. While SimplexGrinnell manages a fleet of over 7,000 vehicles, all 10,500 employees have been encouraged to participate.

Additional improvements and actions taken by SimplexGrinnell include:

  • More than 500,000 pounds of lead-acid batteries have been recycled by SimplexGrinnell district offices.
  • 48 tons of steel have been taken out of the waste stream annually by using lighter, biodegradable packaging materials to ship the company’s flagship Simplex® 4100U fire alarm panels.
  • The company has established programs to properly recycle waste electronic equipment and fluorescent bulbs.
  • The company’s new TrueInsightSM Remote Service diagnostic technology is helping to save fuel consumption by avoiding service vehicle trips to customer locations and better preparing technicians to fix problems on the first visit.
