SimplexGrinnell and Tyco Safety Products to Host Special Event Marking Completion of the Sixth Year of Women in Technology Program

26 Area Students Address Real-life Business Challenges As Part of School Partnership Program

WESTMINSTER, Mass. (May 7, 2008) - Tyco Safety Products and SimplexGrinnell will host a special event on Tuesday (May 13) to celebrate the completion of the sixth year of a highly successful school partnership program that prepares young women for careers in the fields of engineering and technology.

The event will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Gardner High School in the Landry Auditorium at 200 Catherine Street, Gardner, MA. Sharon Moura, Vice President of Global Information Technology for Tyco Safety Products, is this event’s keynote speaker. Invitations have been extended to Tyco employees, local community leaders, college and high school administrators, teachers and facilitators, family and friends.

The Women in Technology program is a collaborative program that aims to develop a seamless connection between business and industry, secondary schools and post-secondary colleges. This year, 26 students participated in the program, from the following schools: Gardner High School, Leominster Center for Technical Education, Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School, and Narragansett Regional High School.

Sanjay Lall, CIO and Vice President of Information Technology at SimplexGrinnell, said of the program: I'd like to express my thanks to students from the local community for contributing to the success of Tyco/SimplexGrinnell. This program is a wonderful learning experience for the students, local schools, and members of our company. This is the sixth successful year for the Women in Technology Program in Westminster with our Information Technology department, something we're very proud of and we intend to continue.

At Tuesday’s event, students will present the results of their projects and discuss lessons they’ve learned. Since October, the Women in Technology students have been working in teams to develop solutions to real-life business challenges. The program requires that they spend five hours every other week at Tyco’s Westminster office building, working directly with engineers and information technology professionals from Tyco Safety Products and SimplexGrinnell. They put in additional hours on their own, and must stay current with all their schoolwork. Some students returned for their third year in the program.

The Students have done excellent work this year, continuing the success of the Women in Technology program, says Bruno Lenart, Manager of New Product Introduction and Six Sigma Master Black Belt at Tyco Safety Products. “Of particular note is their sacrifice and dedication as they have applied themselves to the assigned project work while maintaining their academic grades. The project work is very demanding as it is required that they learn many new skills and business concepts. Their work ethic has been outstanding.

Tyco/SimplexGrinnell, Tyco Safety Products, and the Greater Gardner Chamber of Commerce, including the School to Career Partnership, are the business and industry partners in the program.
