Power Plants
Whether it’s a new construction or an existing operation, utilities confront distinct challenges for fire suppression. For each type of plant – coal, natural gas, oil, nuclear, hydroelectric, or waste-to-energy – our solutions offer a comprehensive fire suppression strategy based on a detailed analysis of the site’s physical layout and processes. The equipment and operations in these facilities require specialized and unique designs. From control rooms that require clean agent gas to lube oil reservoirs requiring deluge or AFFF foam protection to turbine shrouds where water mist is so effective, SimplexGrinnell can provide the necessary solutions.
Petrochemical & Chemical Plants
Refinery processing and production of additives and industrial chemicals require Special Hazards solutions that take into consideration the potential for a fire to migrate rapidly to adjacent areas of exposure. At bulk storage facilities, the large quantity of product easily exceeds the extinguishing capability of most fire responders. In these settings, Special Hazards systems are designed to greatly reduce potential risks by detecting and suppressing a fire at its early stage. Often the primary goal is to contain the fire while cooling other hazards in the surrounding area. SimplexGrinnell specialists will base the solution on a thorough understanding of the hazards present, the configuration of the process or storage vessels, the presence of combustibles, and proximity to other Special Hazards.
Aviation
SimplexGrinnell Special Hazards Systems protect military, commercial and aerospace aviation hangars throughout North America and internationally. These systems generally involve foam extinguishment technologies. Our in-house capabilities allow us to provide start-to-finish project contracting that eliminates the headaches of multiple vendor coordination.
Automotive
With their very large footprints and diverse hazards, automotive plants are typically protected by high-density wet pipe systems, supplemented by dry pipe systems in unheated areas and specialized deluge systems for key components or areas critical to plant operation. SimplexGrinnell’s solutions include the underground supply conduits, hydrants, water tanks and fire pumps that are the norm for adequate distribution of water to individual systems in the overall scheme. Following installation, our Test, Inspection and Maintenance Services provide on-going attention that helps keep these systems ready to perform as expected in an emergency.
Information Technology
Sensitive electronics in telecommunications rooms, Internet server sites, corporate data centers, control rooms, etc. require specialized suppression solutions. Water is not the preferred agent, because even a leaky pipe can cause irreparable damage to the equipment, rendering the facility inoperative. While the replacement cost of equipment is considerable, the potential impacts of data loss and system downtime due to water damage are far too costly to risk exposure. Special Hazards Systems for IT applications typically utilize carbon dioxide for under-flow protection, and Inergen or FM-200 for total flooding. Pre-action sprinklers can be used for backup suppression. SimplexGrinnell generally implements cross-zoned smoke detection and highly sensitive heat detection such as VESDA* systems. If cylinder recharge is not logistically certain with 24 hours of discharge, a fully connected, redundant “reserve” bank of storage agent cylinders is typically required.
