A Special Hazards Suppression System is indicated for high-hazard, high-value manufacturing processes or specialty equipment requiring a combination of electrical and mechanical fire protection systems. These applications require that the Fire Suppression System not disable or damage the contents in the protected enclosure. Special Hazards systems protect an area or building, process or piece of equipment that cannot be protected by a common fire protection sprinkler system as defined by the National Fire Protection Association NFPA 13 – Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems. For example, a manufacturing area or a data storage room. Other examples include cooling towers, process pumps, transformers, mill stands and storage tanks, gas stations, or enclosures that house explosive or flammable liquids, gases or solids. These applications require a specialized fire suppression solution due to high replacement costs or potential interruption of a production line.
The great variety of special hazards requires many different solutions. SimplexGrinnell provides system planning, installation and maintenance of fire protection systems with specialized detection and extinguishing agents developed specifically for the hazardous environment. Our capabilities include Special Hazards systems utilizing dry chemical or clean agent gas cylinders (i.e., Halon, FM-200, Inergen, Sapphire or CO2 for extinguishment. These systems utilize distribution piping and fixed nozzles, along with a detection and notification system that activates a releasing control panel.
