SimplexGrinnell Sprinkler System To Decontaminate Volunteers at Simulated Terrorist Attack Scheduled at PNC Park

BOCA RATON, FL (May 5, 2005)-On May 7, the City of Pittsburgh will simulate a terrorist attack at PNC Park. This disaster drill is a full-scale exercise testing the emergency response capabilities of the City of Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team, PNC Park, local area hospitals, and various response agencies from around the region will also participate in this simulated terrorist event. As part of the exercise, volunteers will experience a water deluge curtain as they exit the stadium following the simulated attack.

SimplexGrinnell, the fire and life-safety company that installed and maintains the fire sprinkler system at PNC Park, is providing the fire protection piping, valves and sprinkler heads necessary for the decontamination system, which will be placed over the park's entrances and exits. Using domestic water, the valves and sprinklers will provide a more thorough saturation than a regular shower head would be capable of offering. Thorough saturation is key to proper decontamination.

This will be the first time a sprinkler system has been specially employed for homeland security decontamination purposes.

"Clearly, sprinkler systems have a role to play, beyond basic fire prevention, in protecting our citizens," said Dave Baer, vice president of marketing for SimplexGrinnell. "SimplexGrinnell plans to work with other public facilities to utilize sprinkler systems in a new manner for homeland security purposes."

SimplexGrinnell has a U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) schedule to provide fire and life-safety systems to government agencies. SimplexGrinnell systems and services help protect the Pentagon and the Smithsonian Institution, and many other federal and state buildings and properties.
