LAS VEGAS, NEV. (June 5, 2005)-SimplexGrinnell, a business unit of Tyco Fire & Security and a leader in fire and life safety, is set to provide customers with Simplex®-branded fire alarm products that meet the new UL 864 safety standard now scheduled to take effect March 31, 2006
At this week's NFPA World Safety Conference & Expo, SimplexGrinnell is highlighting its preparedness for the first major rewrite of the UL 864 fire alarm equipment testing standard since 1996. The readiness is the result of a concerted R&D effort and the ongoing process that has occurred over the years to update Simplex products to keep them current with revisions to the National Fire Alarm Code, NFPA 72. Many of the changes in UL 864 have been put in place to make the UL standard consistent with the new editions of NFPA 72.
UL 864 is the testing standard for fire alarm control panels and accessories issued by Underwriters Laboratories, an independent, not-for-profit product-safety certification organization that has been testing products and writing standards for safety for more than 110 years. UL released the new Ninth Edition of UL 864 in September 2003, with an original implementation schedule that said all fire alarm control equipment manufactured after October 2005 must comply with the new standard in order to receive the UL Mark. Late last month, UL extended the implementation date to March 31, 2006.
"SimplexGrinnell and Tyco Safety Products, which manufactures our Simplex fire alarm products, have stayed on top of the UL 864 rewrite throughout this process," says John Haynes, Director of Product Line Marketing at SimplexGrinnell. "We feel confident that we have done the right things and taken the necessary steps to comply with the new standard. In fact, we had an advantage from the outset because Simplex-branded equipment has been continually updated to follow NFPA 72 changes. As a result, the majority of the UL 864 Ninth Edition requirements were already incorporated into our Simplex fire alarm products."
Well Positioned for New Notification Testing Requirement
One of the significant changes in the Ninth Edition of UL 864 is a new UL requirement for testing of fire alarm notification appliance circuits and power supplies. This testing is intended to ensure the power supply can withstand the typical power surge, known as inrush current, that occurs in the notification appliance circuit when strobes and other notification appliances activate in the event of a fire or other emergency.
"SimplexGrinnell has a distinct advantage with this new testing requirement because our notification appliance design fully anticipated the new UL testing requirements," Haynes says. "The circuitry that's built into Simplex systems helps eliminate inrush. Our systems draw less current, so we can place many more appliances on a notification circuit. That means SimplexGrinnell can provide more cost-effective fire alarm solutions using the Simplex brand."
Streamlining the Testing Process
Another factor that contributes to the readiness of Simplex equipment for the UL 864 Ninth Edition is the fire alarm testing center located in the building that Tyco Safety Products and SimplexGrinnell share in Westminster, Massachusetts. In this testing center, Tyco has replicated the equipment required to conduct UL testing of fire alarm panels and accessories. Not only can Tyco Safety Products and SimplexGrinnell conduct their own preliminary testing at the center, but the actual UL testing of Simplex products can be done there as well by visiting UL personnel.
